CAMBODIAN COURT CLEARS HUN SEN OF ANY RESPONSIBILITY
Phnom Penh, 19 January 2005
CAMBODIAN COURT CLEARS HUN SEN OF ANY RESPONSIBILITY
FOR THE 30 MARCH 1997 GRENADE ATTACK
On 2 February 2004, Sam Rainsy filed a criminal lawsuit (case # 176) at the
Phnom Penh Municipal Court against Hun Sen for assassination attempt on him
and for premeditated murder on 30 March 1997 when a grenade attack killed more
than 16 people (only 12 of the dead were identified) and wounded more than a
hundred other participants in a peaceful protest in front of the National
Assembly.
On 9 January 2005, Deputy Prosecutor Yet Chakriya issued a Court decision to
reject Sam Rainsy’s complaint and to not pursue the case because there are “no
presumptions indicating that Mr. Hun Sen, sex: male, age: 53, occupation:
prime minister of Cambodia, might have been involved in the premeditated
murder on 30 March 1997.”
Sam Rainsy’s lawyer Som Chandyna has been by told by Deputy Prosecutor Yet
Chakriya that there is “no available police report” on the 30 March 1997
incident.
